PAGE 2: 1/64 SCALE ROUTEMASTERS

http://www.corgi.co.uk

Corgi is the king of the diecast Routemaster, having continually produced many hundreds of variations - and millions of toy models - since 1964. I would not even dare to attempt identifying all of the variations - and it seems that every week I discover a new variant on Ebay.

Adding to the confusion, there was a transitional period between owners during the 1980's when batches of labels were sold to dealers, then affixed to a variety of bodies. This resulted in a myriad of "official/unofficial" variants, otherwise known as the "odd patch" (this includes adverts for Barratt, World Airways, Pentel, TDK, Aero, OXO, Old Holborn, Lion Bar, and Buy Before You Fly - Duty Free). At the very least, be careful what you pay for a "rare variant" on one of those. I see a lot of these appearing on Ebay with the description "rare color combination". But as always, I suppose something is worth whatever at least one person will pay for it.

The gallery shown here includes the first Corgi Routemaster, the 468, and continues up through the 1:50 scale buses that were introduced a few years ago. Lots of pictures....please be patient with loading.

Glyn writes "Attached pictures of the Hong Kong model. The box showed photographs of a HK Citybus Olympian and the model was bought on a market stall in HK, November 1996."

Glynh writes: "Here is one picture of the TV AM Charlies Bus model. I understand that this was an official Corgi production produced in small numbers. They were given to child passengers on opentop buses used on a children's programme called, I believe "Splat". I was involved in providing passengers for a Cardiff o/top VR for a item based on the Brecon Mountain Railway. The programme staff had some models in boxes with the stickers applied but others were unboxed and the stickers were applied as they were given out. The kids immediately threw away the boxes (standard issue) and played with the models, so most were chipped very quickly. I managed to obtain three examples (all unboxed). The series finished when TV AM had
financial trouble. Many of the models were given away without stickers."

East Yorkshire
Bob writes: "Corgi marketed (this) as an AEC Renown (since East Yorkshire had some of this make, though nothing like Routemasters). Ironically a number of years later East Yorkshire bought some actual Routemasters and painted them like this - EFE did a contemporary model of these."

People love to identify the bus above as a
Routemaster...but one look at the front clearly
indicates that it isn't. What's confusing is that
it IS an RM body! It's a "kinda sorta" RM.

"The Great Book of Corgi 1956-1983" by Marcel Cleemput is the essential Corgi guide - a special Routemaster bus came packaged with the book. He was a key member of the Corgi team for many years.

The entire set was very nicely packaged
